Following the resounding success of our recent onsite event and in response to numerous requests from those unable to attend, the PMI English Local Group Munich is pleased to present this engaging and thought-provoking topic online.
The artificial intelligence (AI) software market is undergoing rapid expansion. The potential of AI drives this growth to enhance efficiency, optimize decision-making, and foster innovation. An AI software project is an undertaking that aims to deliver a software product or service that embeds AI functionality to be used by humans or machines. This type of project differs significantly from traditional software projects and projects in general. These differences stem from several distinct features that are paramount to AI software development. The AI projects are inherently data-dependent and require iterative development cycles. Uncertainty and experimentation are also inherent to AI projects, as they deal with uncertain requirements and often seek the right solution through iterative hypothesis testing and refining to achieve desired outcomes. Additionally, AI software projects demand specialized expertise, such as knowledge of machine learning, as well as consideration of ethical aspects.
The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide provides principles and guidance for managing projects effectively. However, it does not necessarily address the unique needs of AI software projects. To address these differences, Dr. Alexey Burdakov, Ph.D., has written a paper that critically evaluates the applicability of the PMBOK Guide framework to Artificial Intelligence (AI) software projects, highlighting key limitations and proposing tailored adaptations.
