GenAI offers the great promise that projects can be carried out more successfully through its use. Corresponding tools are increasingly available, cost-effective and becoming ever easier to use.
However, the introduction of GenAI in an organization's project management is more than just the introduction of a new tool. It is about bringing about organizational change. GenAI is a transformative technology that will revolutionize project management practices and the entire discipline of project management and the processes behind it.
The course "Data Landscape of GenAI for Project Managers" is a very good illustration of what to consider when implementing it and also includes a canvas that helps project managers to better understand and manage the opportunities and challenges in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics and enables a structured approach to integrating data and AI into project management activities.

Until now, however, there has been a lack of focus on how this technology can be specifically deployed and used in project management, which factors facilitate its introduction and who the drivers of such an introduction are.
For the creation of the Thought Leadership Report "First Movers' Advantage: The Immediate Benefits of Adopting Generative AI for Project Management", PMI examined the current status of the use of GenAI in project work.
Two key findings:
- GenAI is beginning to permeate project work across various industries, but adoption is by no means universal.
- The companies/organizations that use GenAI intensively also benefit from the advantages of this technology.
The Thought Leadership Report is designed to enable executives and project professionals to recognize and understand the transformative power and impact of GenAI on individual and organizational performance and to identify the key factors that contribute to improved adoption of GenAI in project management.
In relation to the use of GenAI in project management, there are challenges such as access issues, data, reliability, cost, ethical implications and accountability that hinder the adoption of AI. However, it is believed that these challenges can be overcome and that the promise of AI is a great opportunity for project managers, offering them a unique opportunity to help transform the project management profession and deliver projects more successfully.
