260605 Start SocialBridging the gap between ambition and impact often comes down to one question: How can social projects be implemented successfully and sustainably with limited resources? This is where professional project management can make a meaningful difference. The following case study illustrates how volunteer engagement, structured methods, and clear priorities can work together to create lasting social impact—practical, effective, and sustainable.

Sustainable project management can make a significant contribution in volunteer-driven environments, particularly in the area of Social Responsibility. This article highlights how project management professionals can support NGOs and educational institutions by applying proven project management practices in a practical and accessible way.

Volunteer project managers help organizations clarify objectives, set priorities, and make effective use of limited resources. As a result, organizations are strengthened, and projects can achieve greater long-term impact. At the same time, volunteers have the opportunity to apply their expertise in a meaningful way while contributing to society.

Case Study: Modernizing Volunteer Management

One NGO partner, active in several major German cities and supported by a large network of volunteers, faced the challenge of modernizing an existing administration system to meet new process and IT security requirements. The project had to be delivered within tight budget constraints and an ambitious timeline.

At the end of 2025, an evaluation project was launched in collaboration with the PMI Germany Chapter and PM Coach Paul Karnowka. Key activities included the analysis of business and technical requirements as well as a market assessment of potential solution providers.

Following a successful evaluation and decision-making phase, contract negotiations were initiated and implementation is expected to begin shortly. The PM coaches added value primarily through structured decision-making support and the introduction of additional perspectives.

New Project Partner: startsocial e.V.

Another collaboration is currently being established with startsocial e.V., a nationwide German organization supporting volunteer-driven social initiatives.

Founded in 2001 under the patronage of Germany’s incumbent Federal Chancellor, startsocial brings together professionals from business and civil society to strengthen social engagement through consulting, visibility, and recognition. Support is provided through consulting scholarships awarded to social initiatives.

The PMI Germany Chapter’s contribution focuses on two key activities:

  1. A joint project management workshop at the beginning of the scholarship phase in November.
  2. Coaching and mentoring support for selected scholarship recipients through members of the Chapter’s project management network.

Sustainability and Social Responsibility

In the context of volunteer engagement, sustainability means designing initiatives that create long-term social value. Success is measured not only by effort and commitment but by lasting improvements in the lives and communities they serve.

Professionals who would like to contribute their project management expertise in support of Social Responsibility initiatives can engage as PM Coaches and support non-governmental and non-profit organizations working toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

PM Coaches act as trusted advisors rather than operational contributors. They help organizations sharpen objectives, clarify roles, plan resources realistically, and reflect on project outcomes and impact.

Their contribution lies in providing methodological guidance, facilitation, and structured reflection, enabling teams to deliver projects more effectively and sustainably.

Information about regional contacts can be found on the PMI Germany Chapter website:

Currently Open: Ambassador for the Western Region

To further expand Social Responsibility activities across Germany, the PMI Germany Chapter is currently seeking an Ambassador for the Western Region.

Ambassadors identify relevant topics and potential partner organizations, particularly those connected to one or more Sustainable Development Goals. They initiate and develop partnerships, coordinate support from Chapter members, and help define the scope and objectives of collaborative initiatives.

The resulting collaboration is formalized through a jointly developed Project Charter, providing the foundation for effective support of the partner organization.
