Once it becomes clear that everything is going well, the initial nervousness that sometimes accompanies a new project can give way to euphoria. However, project managers should not use euphoria as a marker of success. Yes, it is great to celebrate and feel accomplished, but it is important to pay attention to the guiding principles of project management and lessons previously learned to mitigate the risks that cause the niggling feelings of uncertainty. Undermanaging stakeholders is one worry-inducer that can lead down the slippery slope of distraction, time lost, and crisis prevention. Klao Bell-Lewis will share the pleasant outcomes of a story about a unique project in Kingston, Jamaica, and lessons learned about scanning the environment – even for fringe stakeholders, who could shift unexpectedly to the center.
Klao Bell-Lewis is a professional communicator with training and experience in project management, public relations, event management, corporate communication, digital media, advertising, and journalism. She has held senior management positions at Jamaican, regional, and multinational companies where her responsibilities include executing community social impact programs. She believes all managers, regardless of their field, should receive project management training and aim for PMP certification. A member of the PMI South Africa Chapter, Klao lives in Jamaica with her husband and two daughters, who are the current title holders of the#1 and #3 ranked women's table tennis players.
