Lessons from the Miracle on the Hudson by Kathleen Langone

The miraculous survival of all passengers on the plane that landed on the Hudson River in New York City has given project managers a treasure trove of lessons. As with any commercial flight crew, key processes were in place to handle emergencies. Moreover, Capt. Sullenberger’s experience as a glider pilot and his knowledge of key facts, such as ferry traffic on the Hudson, was crucial in the plane's successful landing and subsequent rescue efforts. For project managers, the effective use of risk management plans in both known and unknown circumstances is more important than ever. Part of this planning involves incorporating insights from key team members to ensure the best responses to emergent situations. We will also examine the movie Sully (2016) and its scenes highlighting the importance of learning from past experiences, further motivating project managers to apply these lessons.

Kathleen has been a project and program manager for over twenty years and has practiced in a broad spectrum of businesses (medical, commercial, and scientific) and managed international teams. She has also been a consultant to emergency management agencies, providing trends and accounts of natural disasters. Recently, Kathleen developed project management training content focused on Risk Management. She has twice been a VP in a local PMI chapter and continues doing project management presentations.
